Inspector Cadaver
Maigret arrives in the small fenland town of Saint-Aubin-les-Marais after a friend asks him to help a man accused of murder. Maigret realizes that the townspeople are hostile to enquiries and worse; a corrupt, ex-colleague is also in town, working against him. The more Maigret uncovers, the more he risks harming the people he came to help.
Extract:

He could not bring himself to look at her while he was lying in bed. She paused for a moment, as if expecting Maigret to react to her pronouncement, then rose to her feet, listened at the door and said as she left the room:
“Do as you wish. I am in your hands.”
Reviews:
“A great novelist. The sheer range of his understanding of the human heart… is unparalleled in twentieth-century fiction.”
-Paul Bailey
