Lock 14

One rainy night, a woman's body is discovered in a stable by the canal at ‘lock 14’. Her apparently indifferent husband is immediately suspected but it seems that everyone on the canals has a history to hide. Maigret explores the strange, nomadic life of the canal workers and their whiskey fuelled orgies, and uncovers a tragic case of lost identity.

Extract:

...The police of Épernay, Rheims, and Paris had been provided with a photograph of the corpse and had been trying in vain all day to establish its identity.

And the rain went on falling relentlessly on an ugly landscape. To the left and right, the horizon was barred by chalky hills streaked with black and white, where the vines, at this time of the year, looked like wooden crosses in a war cemetery.

Reviews:

[Simenon’s] peculiar accuracy of vision...conveys with such a sure touch, the bleakness of human life.
-A.N. Wilson
