Maigret’s long dreamed of retirement is postponed when he finds himself embroiled in a brutal murder case. Gaston Meurant faces the Assizes Court charged with killing his aunt and a small child. The evidence points to his guilt but Maigret can’t believe that this mild-mannered man can have committed this horrific crime. Can Maigret save him from execution?

Extract:

“…Raise your right hand… Swear to tell the truth, nothing but the truth…”

“I swear…”

He saw, on his right, the figures of the jury, their faces standing out more clearly than others in the half-light, and on the right, behind the black gowns of the barristers, the accused man, sitting between two uniformed warders, his chin on his clasped hands, staring intently at him.”

Review:

“A unique teller of tales… What interested Simenon was the average man losing control of his own fate.”
