The Bar on the Seine
Maigret visits a man in prison who he arrested, to tell him he is due to be executed at dawn. The condemned man tells Maigret about a body he saw dumped in the Canal Saint-Martin six years before and the murderer he blackmailed. His story leads Maigret to a bar by the River Seine where his arrival prompts a second murder. Drawn into a complex web of secrets, Maigret struggles to uncover the truth.
Extract:
“...I want to see a lawyer. You can’t keep me here for more than twenty-four hours.”
Maigret blew out a little puff of smoke, thrust his hands in his pockets and left the cell. On the way out he said to the warder:
“Lock him in.”
He was angry, and now he was on his own he could let it show in his face.
