Maigret allows the condemned murderer, Joseph Heurtin, to escape from his cell because he believes that he is innocent and that once released in Paris’s seedy underground, he can prove his own innocence and flush out the real killers. Can Maigret find out who framed Heurtin, catch the true criminal and force him to take Heurtin’s place on death row, before the police track the criminal down?
