Maigret and the Idle Burglar

Maigret is called out in the middle of a cold winter night, to find a savagely bludgeoned corpse has been dumped in the woods. The Public Prosecutor’s department dismisses the case as an underworld vendetta but Maigret refuses to drop the case. He knows the victim is a common burglar, a man who definitely didn’t have gangster connections. Maigret sets out alone to find the truth – although he knows the killer may never be brought to justice...

Extract:

Fumel moved the beam of his torch over the ground near the man’s head; there was no trace of blood.

It wasn’t here that he was coshed. The doctor agrees because from the nature of his wounds he must have bled freely. So he was brought to the Bois, by car no doubt. From the way he’s huddled up, one would even say he was simply pushed out of the car – that the chaps who brought him didn’t bother to get out themselves.”

The Bois de Boulogne lay silent, lifeless as an empty stage, its widely spaced lamps casting perfect circles of white light.
