The Friend of Madame Maigret
Madame Maigret has a strange encounter with a distraught young woman, who leaves her child with her for an afternoon, returning to snatch the child back with no explanation. Elsewhere in town, Inspector Maigret is trying to investigate an anonymous tip-off that a local bookbinder has burned a body in his furnace, but the only trace of the victim is two teeth found in the furnace grate. As the case develops, surprising links emerge between the missing corpse, and his wife’s mysterious encounter.
Extract:
“How does this suit happen to have been found in your house?”
“I’ve never seen it. Anybody might have put it there in my absence. I’ve been here six hours already.”
“Will you try on the jacket, please?”
It fitted him.
“Do you see these stains which look like rust? It’s blood, human blood, according to the experts...”
Review:
“Simenon remains an incredibly expert, dry and inventive story-teller; the spell is infallible.”
-V.S. Pritchett
